Design Studio 1 Cube Construct

The objective for this project is to learn how to use primary architectonic elements, such as planes, to define and “control”
space. In the process of learning how to work with these systems you will use various conceptual strategies and techniques to
explore spatial organization and spatial relationships. Students were asked to design a layered, two-dimensional composition to emphasize or de-emphasize the inherent grid from an Abstract Painting.

Painting - Grid - Thick Square - Cube

By folding, interlocking, and intersecting planes to explore ways to define “spaces” within the limits of the square. It was up to the students to decide the size and number of planes while following the proportions of the 9-square grid.

Cube shape finding and exploration

Students were no asked to ‘stretch’ the ‘thick’ square from the previous assignment into a new 9” x 9” x 9” construct and to explore a variety of spatial conditions.
